Electric Scooter, An Alternative Lifestyle
Scooters are classified under motorcycles. Scooters have step-through frame, protective leg shield, a footboard and generally comes with smaller wheels. Two wheel and three wheel scooters using electric motors instead of gasoline or petrol is called electric scooters. The electric scooter is an alternate to gasoline based scooter. They operate on battery motors. It is environmentally cleaner with reduced emissions. It is economical with lower energy cost. However, the electric scooters are slower in speed and run for a shorter distance before the next refill which in this case is a plug in. They come in a variety of models. Some models are less expensive than gas scooters.
There are references to electric motorcycles in the later half of 19th century. The first electric motorcycle was designed in 1911. But it is only in recent times that electric scooters and motorcycle has been commercially manufactured. The source of power for the electric motor is generally batteries. However, research is going on fuel cell technology for the source of power.
Electric scooters are indeed attractive what with the gasoline price shooting up and are also expected to continue to rise. The energy cost of electric scooters is only twenty five percent of what it costs gas. However, battery charge runs out fast. The scooter runs shorter distance after which the battery has to be recharged. Battery technology has also meanwhile been improving. Recharging can be done at a charging station or at home. A number of electric scooter models are sold in the market which includes Eped Sport/City, Vectrix VX-1, Yo Speed, E-Solex, EVT-4000e, ZAP Zapino, Razor Scooter, Ezip Electric Scooters, Io-scooter and Peugeot Scoot'Elec.
Electric scooters run silently unlike other scooters. As it does not announce itself with the normal noise of scooters, there is a higher risk of accidents. Nevertheless, it does contribute to lessening the noise pollution. There is also no oil to change. There is lesser pollution making it environmentally friendly. Electric scooters invariably do not have to pay road tax or parking charge. The speed of the scooter is lower than gas scooters. The battery declines during winter. But the electric scooters are expected to gain popularity.
